Last August, Claire Hawkins released her debut EP entitled Even These Words. Touching on themes of growth, regret, and family, the EP demonstrates Hawkins’ range as a pop-Americana songwriter and performer.
Growing up in a family of literature fanatics and casual musicians, Hawkins latched onto songwriting as a way to connect to those around her through her love of storytelling. Writing her first sets of lyrics at just nine years old, she later picked up the guitar. She learned her first chords from her Rolling Stones fan dad, who made sure “Dead Flowers” was one of the first songs she could play. Since cracking her way into the New York City music scene at an East Village burger joint, she has performed at venues such as Mercury Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, and The Bitter End. Hawkins matches the clear imagery in her lyrics with rock n’ roll drums, orchestral strings, and her own acoustic guitar. All of this is prominently displayed on her new record Even These Words.
Hawkins wrote, engineered, and produced this EP while studying recorded music at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, where she is a rising junior. By working closely with her professors and peers, she was able to accomplish much of the work for Even These Words in her classes at NYU. In these songs, Hawkins combines her New York City upbringing with her love of country and folk music. While the songs “Ivy + Vine” and “August” add more of the rock elements to the album, the songs “Reckless” and the Patty Griffin-inspired “Loaded Gun” show Hawkins’ folk influence in their narrative songwriting style. Subtle use of cello paired with Hawkins’ emotive singing give these songs a personal touch that is indicative of who Claire Hawkins is as an artist.
